Types of treatment

Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease is unfortunately present to a greater or lesser degree in most adult mouths.  The connection between tooth and gum gradually breaks down unless hygiene is perfect.  This can result in tooth mobility, pain, abscesses and tooth-loss.
Treatments involve careful cleaning of all tartar deposits, the sue of antibacterial medications and thorough instruction to help you avoid further disease.

Occlusal Rehabilitation

The way teeth meet together is referred to as the occlusion.  Tooth loss and poorly executed crowns, fillings etc can result in the occlusion becoming obstructed.  This can lead to various problems, including trauma to some over-used teeth, jaw-joint problems or can merely make chewing uncomfortable.

Rehabilitating a damaged occlusion requires very careful assessment and planning often using a special jig to simulate jaw movement.  Crowning is not always necessary if the discrepancies are not severed but may be needed if significant problems are identified.

Hybrid Treatment

Modern crown systems often allow for closure of spaces using metal-based clip-in partial dentures ( often called “removable bridges ”).  Hybrid treatments involve specially constructed crowns which have specialised features to avoid the need for attachments are just one of the many ways to provide secure, functional and comfortable space-closure with excellent long term life expectancy.

Endodontics (Root Canal)

When decay or trauma leads to death of the nerve inside resulting often in extreme pain, infection and tooth loss.

Root canal treatment involves removal of the dead or dying nerve, reshaping of the canal system, chemical disinfection of the inside of the tooth and very careful filling of the root canal system with an inert material.

Old fashioned endodontics was a bit hit and miss and gained an unfortunate reputation for being painful and often failing.   Modern endodontics is highly advanced by comparison.   Discomfort is rare and normally mild and short –lived.  Modern anaesthetics are very effective and steroid preparations allow us to control inflammation quickly.

Rubberdam, rotary NiTi instruments, digital apex locators and state-of-the-science disinfection protocols probably won’t mean much to the average patient but these are some of the modern techniques that have allowed us to greatly improve the comfort and efficacy of endodontic treatments.

Cosmetic Treatments

Modern material and techniques allow us to provide incredibly natural appearances with our crowns, bridges, fillings and veneers.  Some treatments call for a restoration where different ways of carrying out the restoration can result in a much more natural appearance.

Some cases require replacement of failed, old restorations with a more modern system, resulting in a completely natural appearance.  Correction of naturally occurring rotations, spaces and a whole host of cosmetic concerns is often a straightforward way of enhancing your smile and thereby your confidence.

Whitening of teeth can be a useful way to remove long-term deep staining and although not always appropriate, if carefully carried out in a safe, controlled way can be a highly effective treatment.
